Vaiśampāyana said: The spectators, eyes wide with wonder, made way and Karṇa, the conqueror of enemy cities, entered the large arena.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: आश्चर्य से भरी आँखों वाले दर्शकों ने रास्ता दिया और शत्रु शहरों के विजेता कर्ण ने बड़े मैदान में प्रवेश किया।
He was clad in his natural coat of armour. His face was radiant with his earrings. His bow was in his hand and his sword was tied. He entered like a walking mountain.
वह अपने प्राकृतिक कवच का कोट पहने हुए था। कानों में बालियों से उसका चेहरा दमक रहा था। उनके हाथ में धनुष था और तलवार बँधी हुई थी। वह चलते-फिरते पहाड़ की तरह दाखिल हुआ।
That destroyer of enemy armies was great in fame and wide of eyes. Karṇa was born from Pṛthā when she was a virgin, from a portion of the sun whose rays are sharp.
शत्रु सेना का संहार करने वाला वह महान् यशस्वी और नेत्रों से विशाल था। कर्ण का जन्म पृथा से हुआ था जब वह कुंवारी थी, सूर्य के एक अंश से जिसकी किरणें तेज हैं।
His strength, valour and prowess were like that of a lion, a bull, or a king of elephants. In radiance, beauty and splendour, he was like the sun, the moon and the fire.
उसकी शक्ति, शौर्य और पराक्रम सिंह, बैल या हाथियों के राजा के समान थे। कांति, सौंदर्य और वैभव में वह सूर्य, चंद्रमा और अग्नि के समान थे।

वह सुनहरा ताड़ के पेड़ की तरह लंबा था। वह एक ऐसा युवक था जो शेरों को मार सकता था। सूर्य से उत्पन्न, वह सुन्दर था और उसमें अनगिनत गुण थे।

Everyone in that assembly remained stationary and gazed at him steadfastly. They were filled with great curiosity and asked each other who he was.
उस सभा में सभी लोग स्थिर होकर उसकी ओर देखते रहे। वे बड़ी उत्सुकता से भर गए और एक-दूसरे से पूछने लगे कि वह कौन है।
Supreme among those who are eloquent, the sun's son addressed his unrecognized brother, the son of Pāka's punisher, in a voice that was as deep as the roar of the clouds.
वाक्पटुओं में सर्वोच्च, सूर्य के पुत्र ने अपने अज्ञात भाई, पाक के पुत्र दंडक को बादलों की गर्जना जितनी गहरी आवाज में संबोधित किया।
"O Pārtha! Before the eyes of these people, I will perform feats that will surpass everything that you have done. Don't be too amazed at what you have done."
"हे पार्थ! इन लोगों की आंखों के सामने, मैं ऐसे कार्य करूंगा जो आपके द्वारा किए गए सभी कार्यों से आगे निकल जाएंगे। आपने जो किया है, उस पर बहुत आश्चर्यचकित मत होइए।"
O supreme among those who are eloquent! No sooner had he uttered these words, than the spectators quickly stood up all at once, as if raised up by a single machine.
हे वाक्पटुओं में श्रेष्ठ! जैसे ही उसने ये शब्द कहे, दर्शक तुरंत एक साथ खड़े हो गए, मानो किसी एक मशीन द्वारा ऊपर उठाए गए हों।
O tiger among men! Duryodhana was greatly delighted. Bībhatsu was suddenly filled with anger and a sense of disgrace.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! दुर्योधन बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ। बिभात्सु अचानक क्रोध और अपमान की भावना से भर गया।
With Droṇa's permission, Karṇa, always eager to do battle and immensely strong, exhibited all that Pārtha had displayed before.
द्रोण की अनुमति से, कर्ण, जो सदैव युद्ध के लिए उत्सुक रहता था और अत्यंत बलशाली था, ने वह सब प्रदर्शित किया जो पार्थ ने पहले प्रदर्शित किया था।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Duryodhana and his brothers delightedly embraced Karṇa and said,

"हे महाबाहु वीर! आपका स्वागत है। सौभाग्य आपको यहां ले आया है। आप जानते हैं कि गर्व को कैसे शांत किया जाता है। मैं और कुरु साम्राज्य आपकी खुशी की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं।"

कर्ण उवाच कृतं सर्वेण मेऽन्येन सखित्वं च त्वया वृणे द्वन्द्वयुद्धं च पार्थेन कर्तुमिच्छामि भारत
Karṇa replied: "You have said it and that alone is enough. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I only desire your friendship. And I desire to have a duel with Pārtha."
कर्ण ने उत्तर दिया: "आपने यह कहा है और केवल इतना ही पर्याप्त है। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैं केवल आपकी मित्रता चाहता हूं। और मैं पार्थ के साथ द्वंद्व युद्ध करना चाहता हूं।"
Duryodhana replied: "O scourge of enemies! Enjoy all the pleasures with me. Do that which pleases your friends. Place your feet on the heads of all your enemies."
दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया: "हे शत्रुओं के अभिशाप! मेरे साथ सभी सुखों का आनंद लो। वह करो जो तुम्हारे मित्रों को प्रसन्न करता है। अपने सभी शत्रुओं के सिर पर अपने पैर रखो।"
Vaiśampāyana said: At that, Pārtha considered that he had been insulted. He told Karṇa, who stood in the midst of the brothers like a mountain,

"हे कर्ण! जब मैं तुम्हें मार डालूँगा, तो तुम अवांछित घुसपैठियों और बिन बुलाए वक्ताओं के लिए अलग किए गए लोकों को प्राप्त करोगे।"
Karṇa replied: "O Phalgunī! This arena is meant for everyone and not for you alone. Dharma is that of strength and they are kings who are superior in valour.
कर्ण ने उत्तर दिया: "हे फाल्गुनी! यह अखाड़ा सबके लिए है, केवल तुम्हारे लिए नहीं। धर्म शक्ति का है और वे राजा हैं जो वीरता में श्रेष्ठ हैं।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Altercations are nothing but the resort of the weak. Why use it? Speak with arrows, until my arrow carries off your head in your preceptor's presence."
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! झगड़े और कुछ नहीं बल्कि कमज़ोरों का सहारा हैं। इसका उपयोग क्यों करें? बाणों से बोलो, जब तक कि मेरा बाण तुम्हारे गुरु के सामने तुम्हारा सिर उड़ा न दे।''
Vaiśampāyana said: Pārtha, the conqueror of enemy cities, was embraced by his brothers. With Droṇa's permission, he advanced to fight.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: शत्रु नगरों के विजेता पार्थ को उसके भाइयों ने गले लगा लिया। द्रोण की अनुमति से वह युद्ध के लिये आगे बढ़ा।
Thereupon, Karṇa was embraced by Duryodhana and his brothers. He picked up his bow and arrows and stood ready for battle.
इसके बाद, कर्ण को दुर्योधन और उसके भाइयों ने गले लगा लिया। उसने अपना धनुष-बाण उठाया और युद्ध के लिए तैयार हो गया।
The sky was covered with thundering clouds, with lightning flashes in them. Indra's radiant and coloured bow appeared. The clouds seemed to laugh because of white cranes flying.
आसमान गरजते बादलों से ढका हुआ था और बिजली चमक रही थी। इन्द्र का दीप्तिमान एवं रंगीन धनुष प्रकट हुआ। सफेद सारसों के उड़ने से बादल हँसने लगे।
Seeing that Harihaya was fondly looking down on the arena, the sun dispersed clouds that were above his son.
यह देखकर कि हरिहया मैदान की ओर स्नेहपूर्वक देख रहा था, सूर्य ने उसके पुत्र के ऊपर छाये बादलों को तितर-बितर कर दिया।
Phalgunī was invisible under the shadow of the clouds. But Karṇa was clearly visible, because the sun had dispersed the clouds.
फाल्गुनी बादलों की छाया में अदृश्य थी। लेकिन कर्ण स्पष्ट दिखाई दे रहा था, क्योंकि सूर्य ने बादलों को तितर-बितर कर दिया था।
Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons stood next to Karṇa. Bhāradvāja's son, Kṛpa and Bhīṣma stood next to Pārtha.
धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र कर्ण के बगल में खड़े थे। भारद्वाज के पुत्र, कृप और भीष्म पार्थ के बगल में खड़े थे।
The assembly was divided into two parties, including the women. Since she knew the truth, Kuntibhoja's daughter fainted.
सभा दो दलों में विभाजित हो गई, जिनमें महिलाएँ भी शामिल थीं। सच्चाई जानने के बाद कुंतीभोज की बेटी बेहोश हो गई।

तां तथा मोहसंपन्नां विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित् कुन्तीमाश्वासयामास प्रोक्ष्याद्भिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः
Vidūra, learned in all aspects of dharma, revived the unconscious Kuntī by sprinkling water scented with sandalwood over her.
धर्म के सभी पहलुओं में विद्वान विदुर ने चंदन से सुगंधित जल छिड़ककर बेहोश कुंती को पुनर्जीवित कर दिया।
When she revived, she was struck with grief at the sight of her two sons clad in armour. But there was nothing she could do.
जब वह पुनर्जीवित हुई, तो कवच पहने हुए अपने दोनों पुत्रों को देखकर वह बहुत दुःखी हो गई। लेकिन वह कुछ नहीं कर सकती थी।
When the two were ready and had raised their bows, Śāradvata Kṛpa, well versed in all aspects of dharma and skilled in the rules of duels, said,
जब दोनों तैयार हो गए और अपने धनुष उठा लिए, तो धर्म के सभी पहलुओं में पारंगत और द्वंद्व के नियमों में कुशल शरद्वात कृपा ने कहा,
"This son of Pāṇḍu is Kuntī's youngest son. He is a Kuru and will fight a duel with you.
"पांडु का यह पुत्र कुंती का सबसे छोटा पुत्र है। वह कुरु है और तुम्हारे साथ द्वंद्व युद्ध करेगा।"

त्वमप्येवं महाबाहो मातरं पितरं कुलम् कथयस्व नरेन्द्राणां येषां त्वं कुलवर्धनः ततो विदित्वा पार्थस्त्वां प्रतियोत्स्यति वा न वा
O mighty-armed hero! You should also tell us your mother, father and lineage and the royal dynasty of which you are the ornament. On knowing this, Pārtha will fight with you. Or he may not fight."
हे महाबाहु वीर! आप हमें अपनी माता, पिता और वंश तथा जिस राजवंश के आप आभूषण हैं, वह भी बताइये। यह जानकर पार्थ तुमसे युद्ध करेगा। या हो सकता है कि वह युद्ध न करे।”
At these words, Karṇa's face was flushed with shame. It looked as if a lotus had been faded and torn by showers of rain.
इन शब्दों पर कर्ण का चेहरा शर्म से लाल हो गया। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों बारिश की फुहारों से कमल मुरझा कर टूट गया हो।
Duryodhana said: "O preceptor! It is stated in the sacred texts that there are three ways to become a king—through noble birth, through valour and through leading an army.
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे गुरु! पवित्र ग्रंथों में कहा गया है कि राजा बनने के तीन तरीके हैं - श्रेष्ठ जन्म के माध्यम से, वीरता के माध्यम से और सेना का नेतृत्व करके।
If Phalgunī is unwilling to fight with someone who is not a king, I install him as king in the land of Aṅga."
यदि फाल्गुनी किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति से युद्ध करने को तैयार नहीं है जो राजा नहीं है, तो मैं उसे अंग देश में राजा के रूप में स्थापित करता हूँ।"
Vaiśampāyana said: At that instant, the immensely powerful and fortunate mahāratha Karṇa was instated in the kingdom of Aṅga, with roasted grains of rice, flowers, golden water pots and ritual chanting by those who knew the mantra-s.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: उसी समय, अत्यंत शक्तिशाली और भाग्यशाली महारथी कर्ण को भुने हुए चावल के दानों, फूलों, सुनहरे पानी के बर्तनों और मंत्र जानने वालों के अनुष्ठान मंत्रोच्चार के साथ अंगा के राज्य में स्थापित किया गया था।

He was seated on a golden seat, an umbrella was held above him and whisks were waved at his side. When the cries of "Victory" had died down, the bull among kings told the Kaurava,
वह एक सुनहरे आसन पर बैठा था, उसके ऊपर एक छाता रखा हुआ था और उसकी बगल में मूंछें लहराई जा रही थीं। जब "विजय" का नारा शांत हो गया, तो राजाओं के बीच बैल ने कौरवों से कहा,

अस्य राज्यप्रदानस्य सदृशं किं ददानि ते प्रब्रूहि राजशार्दूल कर्ता ह्यस्मि तथा नृप अत्यन्तं सख्यमिच्छामीत्याह तं स सुयोधनः
"What can I give you that is comparable to your gift of this kingdom? O king! O tiger among kings! Tell me and I will do your bidding." Suyodhana replied, "I wish for your eternal friendship."
"मैं तुम्हें इस राज्य के उपहार के बराबर क्या दे सकता हूं? हे राजा! हे राजाओं में शेर! मुझे बताओ और मैं तुम्हारी आज्ञा का पालन करूंगा।" सुयोधन ने उत्तर दिया, "मैं आपकी शाश्वत मित्रता की कामना करता हूं।"
Having been thus addressed, Karṇa said, "So shall it be." Thereupon, they embraced each other in joy and were immensely happy.
इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर कर्ण ने कहा, "ऐसा ही होगा।" इसके बाद, उन्होंने खुशी से एक-दूसरे को गले लगा लिया और बेहद खुश हुए।
